Part 16: Initiating Process Group

  • KEY BENEFIT
    • Align stakeholder expectations with project purpose
    • Communicates the scope and objectives to stakeholders
    • Show how the stakeholder’s involvement results in the success of the project
    • Basically, makes sure that all the stakeholders are “on the same page”
  • KEY OUTPUTS: Project Charter; Stakeholder Register
  • KEY INPUT: Project Statement of Work
  • In the Initiating Process
    • The initial scope is defined
    • Initial financial resources are committed
    • Stakeholders are identified & analyzed
    • High level risks, assumptions, & constraints are identified
    • Project Manager is selected
    • Project Charter/Stakeholder Register are developed
    • The project is authorized (the sponsor approves the Project Charter)
    • Stakeholders are informed of the approved Charter

  • The business case/approval/funding are typically handled outside of the project boundary (at the portfolio or management level)
  • In a large project with multiple phases, Initiating is completed in each phase
    • As mentioned earlier, at the end of each phase, we determine whether we should keep going on with the project
    • This keeps project focused on its goals
  • Initiating Process may occur at the portfolio/program level (outside of the project’s control)
    • This happens when the organization is evaluating multiple projects that meet the same need, and haven’t decided which one they will execute
