The First Year, Day by Day
Part Two: The fourth trimester
The first three months are often called the fourth trimester, because your baby is still adjusting to life outside the womb and wants much of what they had there: warmth, closeness, movement, your heartbeat and food on demand. You are adjusting too, healing from birth and learning a new person. Over these weeks your baby grows from about 50 cm (20 in) and 3.3 kg (7 lb 4 oz) to roughly 60 cm (24 in) and 6 kg (13 lb), starts to smile and coo, and slowly finds a rhythm. The nights are hard, and they do get easier.
